House in Battaramulla

The House of Light and Shadow

This residence is an exploration of light, shadow, and the fluidity of space—an exercise in breaking the box. By dissolving the corner of the structure, the house allows space to flow outward, dissolving the rigid boundaries of enclosure.

The composition is a play of architectural elements—walls and overhanging slabs that stretch upward, reaching for the sky. With no beams interrupting the design, the edges remain open, enabling the interior to extend seamlessly into the exterior.

The central courtyard further softens these boundaries, merging inside and outside into a continuous living experience.

Here, nature is not excluded but invited in. Birds and small marshland creatures from the neighboring paddy fields often inhabit the courtyard, reinforcing the home’s dialogue with its surroundings. The approach to the dining area is via a gently sloping ramp—a functional element that has transformed into a playful playground for the owners’ children, turning movement into joy.

Throughout the day, the house transforms with light. In the morning, whitewashed walls are animated with shifting shadows, while by evening, reflections from the courtyard pool dance across the ceilings. This constant play of light imbues the home with a dynamic character, making it ever-changing and alive.
