A New Beginning on Site

Estimated read time 2 min read

Yesterday, I visited our new project site to check the setting-out for piling. This work has been a long time in the making, with several delays over the past few years. The site itself is in a very strategic location, but it comes with its own challenges — the area occasionally goes under water during major floods in Sri Lanka.

After the client purchased the land, we carried out a soil investigation and discovered that the soil was extremely weak. Following much deliberation, we decided to raise the building by 6 feet (2000 mm) above the existing ground level to stay above the general flood line, and to proceed with a piling foundation. We also considered a raft foundation, but based on the engineer’s recommendation, piling was the safer option. The foundation cost is considerably high, but given the ground conditions, it is a necessary investment.

I’m grateful that the client made the right decision after careful consideration. During the setting-out inspection, we also checked the accuracy on site — and the variation from the drawings was only 30 mm (just about 1 inch). I was very happy with that level of precision!

Hope we can complete this project smoothly. I’ll keep posting updates as we go. 😊

Celebrating Our Win at the Galle Heritage Excellence Awards 2024

Estimated read time 1 min read

We are deeply honoured to share that we have been awarded the Galle Heritage Excellence Award 2024 under the category of Alterations and Additions for our work on The Bartizan, Galle Fort.

The award ceremony was held on 3rd October 2025, celebrating outstanding efforts in preserving and enhancing the architectural heritage within the Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that remains one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured historic environments.

This recognition is particularly meaningful to us, as The Bartizan project beautifully embodies our passion for sensitive restoration and adaptive reuse. Our approach aimed to preserve the authentic charm and layered history of the fort’s colonial architecture, while giving it a renewed life as a boutique hotel that welcomes the modern traveller.

Receiving this award reaffirms our belief that design excellence and heritage sensitivity can coexist — and thrive — when guided by respect for context, craftsmanship, and continuity.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated team, collaborators, and the owners of The Bartizan for entrusting us with this special project.

Welcome to Our Blog: Creating Places for People

Estimated read time 2 min read

Every space tells a story. As architects, we believe our role is to shape those stories — of families creating homes, companies designing inspiring workplaces, and hotels crafting experiences that touch the senses.

Through this blog, we’ll be sharing thoughts and insights from our practice — from architecture and interior design to the larger questions of space, setting, and the human experience. Our work spans houses, offices, hotels, and select urban design projects — each approached with the same care and curiosity for how people live, work, and interact with their surroundings.

Our design philosophy is grounded in excellence, beauty, and the creation of places for people. We believe architecture should quietly enhance life — offering clarity, comfort, and a sense of belonging. Whether it’s a contemporary home, a workplace interior, or a boutique hotel, each project is an exploration of how space can serve life gracefully.

In the posts to come, we’ll share glimpses of our projects, design reflections, and lessons learned from the process — the thinking behind a space, the light that defines it, and the small details that make it feel alive.

If you’re planning a home, an office, a renovation, or an interior project, we hope these stories will offer inspiration — and maybe spark a conversation about creating spaces that truly work for you.

Welcome once again — and thank you for joining us on this journey of design and place-making.
